Insomnia is a lot more common than you might think. In fact, studies have suggested that over 25% of adult Americans suffer from bouts of insomnia every year. But the question remains: What to do on those sleepless nights? Are we resigned to be tossing and turning until daylight or is there an alternative? These three tips may help you better deal with those sleepless nights and will hopefully help you fall asleep faster.
Get out of bed. It may seem counter intuitive, but simply lying in bed when you can’t fall asleep likely won’t improve the situation. A better alternative may be to get out of bed, walk around the house for a few minutes, perhaps even engage in some light reading, and then try again.
Avoid turning on too many lights. When getting out of bed, ensure you only turn on the bare essentials when it comes to lighting. Low wattage and lower temperature lights are preferable, especially for any kind of reading light, as the goal is to not trick the body into thinking it’s daytime.
Avoid screens. The blue light emitted by the screens of our various devices suppresses the secretion of melatonin, which our brains use to regulate our sleep/wake cycles. When tossing and turning at night, sneaking a peek at our phones or tablets may only worsen the problem, and therefore should be avoided.
